Originating from Thailand, it belongs to the Southeast Asian grape tomato family, known for its plum-like shape, thicker skin, and higher sugar content compared to standard tomatoes. This variety gained popularity in 1997 when Nichols Garden Nursery in the U.S.A. started offering it. Since then, its exquisite flavor and attractive appearance have spread globally, appearing in farmer’s markets and gourmet restaurants worldwide. If you visit Thailand, make sure to ask for kanchanaburi, the local name for this delightful tomato, which shares its name with a Thai province.
